Do Kwon co-founded Terraform Labs and built TerraUSD, an algorithmic stablecoin that collapsed in May 2022, destroying roughly $40 billion. He pleaded guilty to fraud, sentenced to 15 years in 2025.

Cobra (also Cøbra): Pseudonymous operator and guardian of bitcoin.org, the website originally registered by Satoshi in 2008. Chose to lose a copyright suit by default rather than reveal his identity.

Strategy's co-founder settled SEC fraud charges in 2000. Two decades later he built the largest corporate Bitcoin position on debt and public markets — the trust the asset was built not to need.

Paul Calder Le Roux (1972–): E4M (TrueCrypt precursor) author who built an international criminal empire. Arrested 2012, named as Satoshi candidate in Evan Ratliff's The Mastermind (2019).

Internet entrepreneur who founded Circle and launched USDC in 2018. Built the largest regulated dollar stablecoin while publicly arguing that Bitcoin's value is its non-sovereignty.

Elon Musk (born 1971): Tesla and SpaceX founder, PayPal co-founder. A 2017 blog post named him as Satoshi; he denied it within a week. His Bitcoin footprint is Tesla's 2021 purchase and Dogecoin.

Qualcomm engineer who wrote the Proof of History paper and founded Solana. Calls Bitcoin's proof-of-work an unhackable masterpiece and says the asset has no value beyond insurance.

Craig Steven Wright (born 1970): Australian computer scientist who publicly claimed to be Satoshi in May 2016. UK High Court (COPA v Wright, March 2024) found he fabricated evidence on a grand scale.

Registered dogecoin.com as a joke about altcoin proliferation, left the community in 2015, called Bitcoin cult-like in 2018, and in 2021 rejected the whole industry in public.

A Silicon Valley executive (Yahoo, AOL) who joined Ripple in 2015 and became CEO in 2016. Has called Bitcoin both China-controlled and, separately, a legitimate store of value.

French software engineer. Bitcoin Core contributor from ~2015, founded Bitcoin ABC, led the 2017 BCH hard fork, defended BCH in the 2018 BSV hash war, led the 2020 split into eCash.

Fran Finney: wife of Hal Finney (the first known person other than Satoshi to run Bitcoin). She witnessed Bitcoin's earliest moments, cared for Hal through ALS, and became the keeper of his legacy.

Harold Thomas Finney II (1956–2014): Caltech engineer, PGP 2.0 developer, Extropian, cryonics advocate, RPOW creator, first Bitcoin recipient and first known person other than Satoshi to run Bitcoin.

Monero's long-time lead maintainer. Argues Bitcoin's transparency is the use case for Monero, and cites Bitcoin's 2010 and 2018 inflation bugs as evidence of auditability risk.

Dorian Prentice Satoshi Nakamoto (1949–): Japanese-American engineer in Temple City, CA. Falsely identified by Newsweek (2014) as Bitcoin's creator. Self-denied. Community raised 67+ BTC for him.

American engineer. Pre-Bitcoin HTTP/2 (SPDY) contributor. Co-founded BitGo (2013) for institutional Bitcoin custody. Signed and then cancelled the New York Agreement / SegWit2x (November 2017).

Japanese researcher and software developer (1970-2013). Released Winny in 2002, defendant in 2004-2011 contributory copyright-infringement case. Japan-domestic Satoshi-identity candidate.

Sergio Demian Lerner (1972–): Argentine cryptographer and blockchain researcher whose Patoshi analysis identified Satoshi as a single dominant early miner accumulating ~1.1M BTC, never spent.

Long-time Bitcoin Core contributor (gmaxwell), Blockstream co-founder, co-developer of libsecp256k1. Authored CoinJoin, co-designed Confidential Transactions. Known for deep technical write-ups.

Ethereum's first CEO, removed in 2014, who built Cardano on the opposite design choices. His verdict on Bitcoin moved from "worth a Turing prize" to "a religion, not an ecosystem".

Twice-over fintech founder (E-Loan, Prosper) who co-founded the company that built the XRP Ledger in 2012. In 2021 he called Bitcoin's proof-of-work a technology the industry should retire.

American developer (luke-jr), long-tenured Bitcoin Core contributor. Maintains Bitcoin Knots; co-founded Ocean mining pool (2023). Suffered a $3.5M+ wallet theft in late 2022 (compromised PGP key).

Journalist who spent fifteen years investigating Satoshi Nakamoto's identity, publishing The Mysterious Mr. Nakamoto (2025). Also wrote one of Bitcoin's first mainstream features (Wired, 2011).

The Google engineer who shipped Litecoin in 2011, called Bitcoin the soundest money in the space for a decade after, and sold every coin he held in 2017.

Russian-Canadian programmer (1994–). Bitcoin community member from 2011, Bitcoin Magazine co-founder, pybitcointools author, Ethereum whitepaper author (late 2013).

Wrote BIP 1, the document that defined the Bitcoin Improvement Proposal process. Founded libbitcoin and Dark Wallet. In 2015 he left Bitcoin to fight ISIS in Syria, was arrested, and never charged.

Chinese entrepreneur (1986–). Translated Bitcoin whitepaper into Chinese (2011), co-founded Bitmain (2013), backed Bitcoin Cash with hashpower (2017), later founded Matrixport and Bitdeer.

American cryptographer (1980-2011), Mixmaster lead developer, KU Leuven PhD candidate. Died by suicide 68 days after Satoshi's last message. Later named in a Satoshi-identity hypothesis.

Entrepreneur (1979–). Memory Dealers founder, early Bitcoin angel investor, bitcoin.com operator, Bitcoin Cash advocate. Renounced US citizenship 2014; arrested in Spain April 2024.

Belgian software engineer (sipa), Bitcoin Core committer since 2011. Author/co-author of BIP-32, BIP-141 (SegWit), BIP-340/341 (Schnorr/Taproot). Initiator of libsecp256k1; Blockstream co-founder.

Canadian cryptographer, Bitcoin Core developer. Proposed Replace-by-Fee, built OpenTimestamps. Joined BitcoinTalk as retep in Dec 2010. Named a Satoshi candidate by HBO in 2024 (denied).

Dutch developer (handle laanwj). Built the original bitcoin-qt GUI; succeeded Gavin Andresen as Bitcoin Core lead maintainer (April 2014 - August 2022); withdrew merge privileges in February 2023.

American software developer (known as bytemaster) who joined BitcoinTalk in mid-2010 arguing on-chain settlement was too slow for micropayments — the thesis behind BitShares, Steem, and EOS.

Created Mt. Gox in 2010 and sold it in 2011, then co-created the XRP Ledger and Stellar. Says the whitepaper convinced him double-spend was solvable at all.

Software engineer (born 1974), Linux kernel contributor, Red Hat employee. Discovered Bitcoin via Slashdot in July 2010. Top-3 Bitcoin Core contributor, built cpuminer, wrote BIPs, co-founded Bloq.

Pseudonymous early Bitcoin user who ran one of the largest 2010 nodes and hosted public blockchain snapshots. His snapshot seeded Gavin Andresen's recovery patch after the value overflow incident.

Software developer (born 1966), founder of Wasabi Software, creator of the Bitcoin Faucet. Chosen by Satoshi to lead the project; served as Bitcoin lead maintainer from 2011 to 2014.

Software developer from Jacksonville, Florida who ported Bitcoin to macOS, pioneered GPU mining, and made the first known real-world purchase — two pizzas for 10,000 BTC on May 22, 2010 (Pizza Day).

BitcoinTalk administrator (handle theymos) from 2010, Bitcoin Wiki admin, later r/Bitcoin moderator. Satoshi transferred forum control to him before departing; led the 2011 bitcointalk.org migration.

German cryobiologist, transhumanist, and cypherpunk who joined the bitcoin-list discussion in October 2009, replying to Satoshi's post about Bitcoin stability and asking about Debian packages.

Pseudonymous individual who published the first BTC-USD rate on October 5, 2009 ($1 = 1,309.03 BTC) based on electricity cost. Did the first BTC-fiat sale with Martti Malmi; proposed the BTC ticker.

Finnish developer (born 1988); Bitcoin's most prolific early contributor after Satoshi. Exchanged ~260 emails with Satoshi, ran bitcoin.org, ported to Linux, did the first BTC-to-fiat sale.

Software engineer at Google (Maps, Earth, Gmail anti-spam) who contacted Satoshi in April 2009, became an early contributor, and built BitcoinJ. His Satoshi correspondence was made public in 2017.

Dutch agile coach and AardRock founder whose questions on the P2P Research list prompted Satoshi to reconfirm the 21,000,000-coin supply cap he had first stated publicly five weeks earlier.

Belgian political theorist (1958-) and founder of the P2P Foundation, who engaged with Satoshi on the P2P Research list in February 2009, asking about Bitcoin's operational readiness.

British commercial lawyer and electronic commerce policy adviser who reported problems running Bitcoin on the bitcoin-list mailing list in January 2009, prompting a direct response from Satoshi.

Computer scientist, legal scholar, and cryptographer (1964-) who conceived Bit Gold (1998) — the closest conceptual Bitcoin precursor — and coined the term smart contracts.
