Tracing Satoshi Nakamoto — every documented event from 2008 to the disputed 2014 return

Figures: Satoshi Nakamoto

This entry is a chronological master index of every documented Satoshi Nakamoto event in the Archive, rendered as an interactive D3 timeline.

What is included: every Archive entry attributed to Satoshi as the author — private correspondence, mailing-list posts (cryptography, bitcoin-list, p2p-research), BitcoinTalk and P2P Foundation forum posts, and SourceForge releases. The timeline does not include third-party writing about Satoshi.

How to read the chart: each dot is one event. The horizontal axis is time (August 2008 to early 2014). The vertical lanes are communication channels. Hover any dot to see the title and date; click to open the source entry. The dot density per lane shows where Satoshi spent attention at each moment; the gaps show silences.

What the shape reveals at a glance:

  • The pre-launch ramp on the cryptography mailing list and Bitcoin-list (October 2008 – January 2009).
  • The explosion of BitcoinTalk activity from late 2009 through 2010 — the densest stretch of Satoshi’s documented life.
  • The 75-day SourceForge SVN gap in March–May 2010 (separately analyzed in the source-code analysis).
  • The rapid tail-off in early 2011, ending with the April 2011 farewells to Mike Hearn and Gavin Andresen.
  • The single disputed 2014 P2P Foundation post (the Dorian rebuttal), which sits alone three years after everything else. Michel Bauwens later recalled in a 2025 interview that Satoshi also wrote to him directly around that time to deny being the man identified by Newsweek — that private message is not in the Archive (no published copy exists), but it is the missing context for the lone 2014 dot.

Satoshi Activity Timeline (2008-2014)

765 documented events authored by Satoshi across all public channels

1. Channel × Time Swimlane

Each dot is one Satoshi event. Hover for the title; click to open the entry. Vertical dashed lines mark major milestones.

2. Private Correspondence by Recipient

Private emails only, split by who Satoshi was writing to. The channel-only view above lumps these into a single "Private email" lane; here each major recipient gets a lane, showing how Satoshi's closest correspondents shifted over time.

3. Cumulative Activity

Running total of events. The shape shows the steep mid-period ramp and the abrupt 2011 plateau when Satoshi stepped away.
