In August 2011, the Bitcoin Forum completed its migration from its original location at bitcoin.org/smf to the independent domain bitcointalk.org.
Original Forum
In November 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto initially created a forum on Zetaboards. Shortly after, Martti Malmi set up a more robust forum using Simple Machines Forum (SMF) software at bitcoin.org/smf. This SMF-based forum became the central gathering place for the early Bitcoin community, where developers, miners, and users discussed technical proposals, shared mining experiences, and coordinated development. Satoshi himself was an active participant, posting under the username “satoshi” until December 2010.
Forum Administration
Satoshi transferred administrative control of the forum to Theymos (Michael Marquardt) and Sirius (Martti Malmi) before his departure. Theymos became the primary administrator and managed the forum’s day-to-day operations.
Migration
The move to bitcointalk.org was driven by the need to establish the forum as an independent entity, separate from the bitcoin.org domain. All existing posts, threads, and user accounts were preserved in the migration. The forum continued to use SMF software and maintained the same structure and community.
Legacy
Satoshi Nakamoto’s 575 forum posts, from November 2009 to December 2010, are preserved on the site, alongside the earliest public discussions of Bitcoin mining and trading and the first known commercial Bitcoin transaction — the purchase of two pizzas for 10,000 BTC by Laszlo Hanyecz on May 22, 2010.
