In the third email of the chain, Satoshi thanked Adam Back for pointing him to Wei Dai’s b-money proposal — eighteen minutes before Back’s own follow-up suggesting the MicroMint paper. The historically load-bearing line — already cited in the archive’s analysis of Satoshi’s self-statements — reads:
Satoshi Nakamoto (email to Adam Back, August 21, 2008, 5:59:49 PM UTC)Thanks, I wasn’t aware of the b-money page, but my ideas start from exactly that point.
This sentence is one of the primary-source observations underpinning both the cypherpunk-independent-arrival analysis and the bitcoin-design-lineage analysis: Satoshi reached the design space independently and only learned of b-money via Adam Back’s referral earlier that same day, when, by his own email of the day before, his C++ implementation was nearly finished (what Satoshi knew before the code was done sets this date beside every other precursor). It is also the central primary-source evidence the Wei Dai identity hypothesis weighs in its own §2.2, as the admission Wei Dai would have been making to no one but himself if he had been Satoshi.
The same email noted that Satoshi planned to contact Wei Dai directly to confirm the citation year — the message that would be sent the following day (see the 2008-08-22 Satoshi → Wei Dai email). b-money was subsequently added as reference [1] in the Bitcoin whitepaper. This quote is also the key biographical moment in Adam Back’s biography.
Back had only proposed the Hashcash-as-b-money’s-mint pairing on paper, in his own 2002 Hashcash paper §7 — this reply is Satoshi confirming, in his own words, that he had in fact arrived at that exact synthesis independently.
