Re: Bitcoin Transfer - UI wording suggestion

Illustration of two silhouetted figures connected by an email-thread line, above a mock cryptocurrency-wallet transaction window where a crossed-out label is replaced by a revised one, with an alternate wording noted below.

In the final email of the Bitcoin Transfer sub-thread, Trammell accepted Satoshi’s explanation that the default label was “Your Address,” not “Satoshi”, agreed the mislabeling was his own mistake, and offered a concrete UI improvement suggestion:

I think had it said “Received with address: X” rather than just “Received with: X” I think I would have understood, although I’m sure that address being mislabeled ‘Satoshi’ was the primary reason for my initial confusion.

He also identified the closest real-world analogy for Bitcoin’s multiple receiving addresses:

You’re right though, there’s really nothing comparable in the current financial system that people are used to other than maybe being able to use multiple recipient email addresses for PayPal. Perhaps it could say “Received payment to: X”?

The code records what happened to the suggestion. In the first commit of the bitcoin/bitcoin repository, on August 30, 2009, whose version number is 105 (v0.1.5), both of Trammell’s phrasings, Received payment to and Received with address , survive as commented-out lines. The line actually used is From: unknown, To: , the form Nicholas Bohm said he preferred on February 3. Beneath it Satoshi left a comment: “The labeling feature is just too confusing, so I hid it by putting it at the end where it runs off the screen. It can still be seen by widening the column, or in the details dialog.” In version 0.2.4, on February 20, 2010, which made receiving-address labels more visible, the line became From: unknown, Received with: and the comment was removed.
